About: We were able to connect with Yari, who runs Finca la Orquídea with her mother, Mariela, at World of Coffee in San Diego this year. Yari was incredibly kind and excited to share her coffees with everyone at the expo. We were fortunate enough to cup many lots from her two projects (Finca la Orquídea and Chapolera JYH), and she even sent us home with about 30 samples that we're still working our way through. This washed gesha absolutely floored us and is a shining example of what we look for in a coffee. This is probably one of the best geshas we've had out of Colombia, and it's really special to be able to have it to share with you! Below is a story that Yari shared with me about her mother and how they started growing gesha on their farm.
"My mother has been a coffee farmer her whole life; at 73 years old she still upholds the tradition of processing fully washed coffees. In 2017, Yaritza was a coffee instructor, teaching tasting and varieties. On one occasion, a friend from Tolima gave Yaritza 200 grams of washed Gesha with the aim of holding a workshop on the variety. Yaritza kept that seed in a drawer of her desk for the class; her mother, Mariela, found the coffee and said, “The bean is beautiful; I’m going to see if I can start a coffee seedbed.” That’s how she managed to germinate a few Gesha seedlings and planted them for the first time at the La Orquídea farm. After that, seeds are harvested from the producing plants to plant more Gesha."
